Palermo airport is located in Puntaraisi, about 30 km west of Palermo and it has been recently dedicated to Falcone and Borsellino. Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were two anti-mafia judges, murdered by the mafia in 1992.

The history of Palermo-Puntaraisi airport starts in 1953, when a committee for Palermo Airport was created. Before then, Palermo airport was Boccadifalco airport, a military airport also used for civilians. However, in the 50’s, Boccadifalco was not enough for the increasing number of passengers.
Palermo-Puntaraisi airport was finally completed in 1960. In the following decades it was decided that Palermo airport needed a new runaway, which was completed only in the 90’s.
